1. Background information

The Initial Teacher Training/Education (ITT/E) qualifications register was previously operated by Standards Verification UK (SVUK), SVUK ceased to operate with effect from 31 March 2011.

The process formerly in operation endorsed ITT/E qualifications for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector which are validated by institutions in England. This system, which played an important role during the initial phases of introducing the reforms to establish a qualified workforce, has been a means to ensure parity in qualifications arising from the two systems of Awarding Institutions (AIs) - Awarding Bodies (AB) and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) - so that trainee teachers can meet the requirements for professional formation whichever pathway (or combination) they follow.

IfL are replacing this system with robust but lighter touch arrangements. We are keen to ensure that quality is maintained, so awarding institutions must formally self declare that their qualifications fully examine and test the most current version of the teaching standards and adhere to relevant guidance.

All further education initial teacher education (FE ITT) provision for the FE/learning and skills sector in England has to meet the Secretary of State’s requirements which relate to the professional standards published by Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK)

2. What is the ITT/E Qualifications Register

The Initial Teacher Training/Education (ITT/E) qualifications register is a central register containing details of all the ITT/E qualifications offered in England.

3. Why are IfL providing this register

IfL are working to support the development of new teachers and trainers to the sector. By providing this online register, those wishing to undertake teacher training will be able to search for a course that meets their requirements. ITT/E qualifications that meet the required standards are placed on the register maintained by the Institute for Learning (IfL). Qualifications placed on the register will be accepted by the IfL as the starting point for professional formation leading to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status.

4. I can’t find a course on the register that I know exists, what does that mean

If the course is not listed on the register then the Awarding Organisation has not registered it with IfL, therefore it has not been quality assured. Also if this is a DTLLS course that is not on the ITT/E qualifications register you will not be able to apply for an ITT grant (if you meet the eligibility criteria).

5. How do I search for a course

The searchable register will be available soon.

FAQs for Awarding Organisations

6. Why do we need to register our Awarding Organisation and qualifications

The register is to ensure that qualifications fully examine and test the most current version of the teaching standards and adhere to the relevant guidance. If you do not register your organisation, then we cannot enter the qualifications that you award onto the ITT/E qualifications register, as they will not have been quality assured .  This means that those wishing to undertake an ITT/E qualification will not be able to find your courses on the register when they search, and also those normally eligible to apply for an ITT grant will be unable to do so.
